5/25/2023 0 Comments Putty squad sega genesis![]() It was written to actually confirm the game no longer existed!!! Did you honestly feel at the time that your letter would have the desired effect – considering all the previous failed attempts from others?Īctually no, I didn’t think the letter would have any effect whatsoever. It seemed to cover all the bases to convince System 3 that you were serious about preserving the Amiga development. I have to say, the letter to Mark Cale was fantastic. To be honest, I wasn’t all that fussed, and in all honesty, at that time I would only have been interested in cracking it for Fairlight had it been released back when it should have been, it was just another game that was completed and should have been released, but then again, gave me something to do nearly 20 years later! ) So were you one of those frustrated fans at the time who saw Putty Squad reviewed and never surface at the time? ![]() Enjoy! Short interview with Galahad (Phill B-B) The full interview can be found below.Īlong with the the CGB version, we’ve included the PC demo and Mega Drive prototype that surfaced in recent years. Not everything could be printed in the book, so here are the assets below. Whilst producing the book, we were kindly provided with a number of PS2 and CGB assets from both Andy Roberts and Nick Lee. We discuss the various developments with Phil Thornton (Putty Squad designer), Andy Roberts (PS2, CGB project leader), Jon Wells (CGB developer), Galahad (A1200 version saviour), John Twiddy (A1200 developer + other various conversions), Michael Smith (CGB artist) and Nick Lee (A1200, Mega Drive and PS2 artist). It's let down by the incredible amount of grinding involved which ends up being frustrating beyond any reasonable level. If this was just a little more approachable, easier to get into, then the game would have been much better. While It's certainly better than the previous iteration, it's no patch on the first two titles. Sadly, the fact remains that FlatOut 4 brings nothing new to the series. They all sound different but each and every one of them could have certainly been better. Another shared issue is the audio, particularly the engine of each car. This is a problem that Kylotonn's other title, WRC 6 - which I recently reviewed, suffers from too. Sadly the game suffers from a drop in framerate whenever anything too hectic goes on. ![]() The sun, particularly on some matches, looks fantastic as it hangs low in the sky with its rays gleaming across and highlighting the scenery. Sparks will fly as cars collide and grind along each other. However, the game does have a decent amount going for it. The cars could have certainly done with a little more detail, as could the scenery. However, there are areas that could have been much better. What works well is the large amount of destruction on show with the game, as almost everything in the game can be crashed through and sent flying, littering the track for those behind you. These are only a small number of areas that feature in the admittedly large number of tracks on offer. Snow, desert, industrial areas, chemical plants and of course residential areas. It also accentuates the variety of tracks on offer. The colourful style certainly works well with the type of game that this is. Finally, there's assault - a race with weapons for you to use against the opposition.Īesthetically, FlatOut 4 is fairly average. Of course, you also have Time Trial, which is a case of just beating the set time. Stunt mode makes a return from older titles, tasking you to crash and send your driver flying through the windscreen into a target area. ![]() Arena mode offers something similar but with respawns, so you're tasked with causing as much damage as possible and finishing with the most points. The best is a Destruction Derby style of Deathmatch, by far the highlight of the game. This offers a collection of different modes. It's insufferably bad design, simple as that.įlatOut mode highlights where more focus should have been placed with the game. The only problem then is that you're just doing the self-same thing in a faster car. Rewards from an event are paltry, which means you'll have to repeat each mode to death until you can actually gain the funds to buy a car from the next group of vehicles. It acts as any career mode does, but extended to the point of annoyance. The Career is by far the worst part of any game mode. At least it would have if the game would let you take advantage of it. It's a shame because FlatOut 4 has a fair amount going for it. You can be going considerably faster, hit the rear of another car with impressive force and all that tends to happen is that you're slowed down to an incredibly irritating, slow, pace. Ramming into the back of another car has a similar effect to having another car alongside you, only multiplied a thousand fold. However, on corners they seem to think plowing into you, rather than taking the corner and attempting to win the race makes the most sense. Were that the only complaint with the AI, that’d be fine. It wouldn't be too bad if they just crashed into you in an attempt to put you out, but too often they'll just grind alongside you, slowing the both of you down. Where the complaint comes is that the AI doesn't seem interested in actually racing you, more just slowing you down. There's little doubt that one major aspect of the game is crashing into other cars, that's how you build up your boost option. What doesn't help matters is the atrocious AI. One of the largest culprits is any course with railroad tracks, which are the bane of my existence. Driving over even the smallest of bumps will see a truck fly like a paper plane in a storm. However, what has been lost is any sense of weight. How the cars handle have always been fairly decent and this much is kept intact. It's always been a pure arcade game based around wanton destruction, the collision of your car against others and the wrecking of almost everything in sight. The fine details of FlatOut have never been precise. 5/25/2023 0 Comments Unbound worlds apart mapIt feels like the hitbox for Soli taking damage (you only get one hit) is much larger than the one that detects when you’re standing on a platform.ĭespite all that, I wouldn’t call Unbound a difficult game. Just barely miss the spikes that cover most walls, ceilings, and floors? Actually you didn’t, now you die. I’ve played and enjoyed games like this before, but Unbound feels unfair thanks to stiff controls and a low tolerance for mistakes of any kind. It’s essentially a test of trial and error the whole way through you throw yourself at a platform, see if it doesn’t work like you guessed it to, die, and try again until you succeed. The platforming isn’t very fun, simply put. These branches lead to linear platforming challenges which lead back to the main path once you’re done. The main path is essentially a straight line, but you’ll frequently be asked to take a branch to get an item marked on your map, removing any incentive to actually explore the gorgeous world the developers have crafted. I won’t judge it as a metroidvania in that case, even if it has all the trappings of one, but the level design is still bland. Sure, it has all the trappings of one: a large world, unlockable abilities, and backtracking, but it’s more of a puzzle platformer as is claimed on the steam page. Said snippets of lore serve as optional collectables hidden behind difficult platforming challenges or puzzles, but they’re very easy to discover.Įxploration really isn’t a focus of Unbound, because it’s not really a metroidvania. Some players might find it interesting, but it personally came across as confusing. Despite being the village outcast, it’s up to you to traverse multiple worlds and find a way to fix things. The story is very simple, but NPCs are ready to dump a bunch of lore on you if you choose to speak with them. You play as Soli: a cute little mage who discovers they can open portals to other worlds just as said worlds begin to apocalyptically converge. Unbound: Worlds Apart looks to take direct inspiration from Hollow Knight, but fails to capture what made that game, and the genre itself, special. Well, I haven’t done everything yet, but I certainly want to go back and chip away at the extra difficult sections I missed. One of my favorite games, Hollow Knight, does exactly that and it instantly grabbed me with it’s creepy and cute atmosphere, and wouldn’t let go until I had seen everything it had to offer. These types of games typically plop you somewhere in their world with minimal direction, and off you go to discover the story as you acquire new powers to aid in your exploration. Rightly so, in my opinion, as the genre can loosely be centered around the theme of finding your own path. So far, basic gameplay is just looking for required objectives to complete your current area to progress to next one such as locating crystals to open a portal or collecting mushrooms to open door.Metroidvanias and difficulty go hand in hand these days. Puzzles / gimmicks don't really repeat themselves and you've constantly facing something new and fun with each new area. ![]() ![]() The artstyle is fantastic and each NPC have a unqiue look. It's fairly challenging but pretty forgiving and generous with checkpoints. ![]() So far, the game have been pretty enjoyable from my first 5 hours, there's some collectibles but nothing obscured that isn't obvious on your map. This is used to solve puzzles, help you with platforming, etc. You only get a basic jump and an ability to create a rift that can do only one function depending on locations such as freezing / slowing time, turning you into a block, changing enemies to something else, etc. I've seen one boss fight so far that required some platforming to defeat. There are some ability gating and I found a double jump and wall jump but this game is purely a platformer with no combat. This game feel like it's roughly 75% platformer and 25% Metroidvania. This one just came out few days ago and I haven't seen anyone talking about this here so thought I'd throw this post up. 5/25/2023 0 Comments Xfile the movie![]() ![]() Even Scully’s boss-a Catholic priest-says it’s time to give up the fight. The agency’s only link to the killers is Father Joe, a pedophilic former priest who is getting some really disturbing psychic vibes. I’m not really a huge fan, but I’m guessing on big projects, Endnote may be a better “cite while you write” option than Zotero. I also downloaded the free version of Endnote from ODU.I can’t make a case unless I know both □ Morrison LOVES Endnote and I’m still trying to figure out why or if it is better than Zotero. Therefore, I end up maintaining two copies of my entire citation library … the main library is driven out of Zotero and I then periodically upload a current version into Endnote. Also, you can export all or just one or more folders of your library of citation as a backup or to upload (as an RIS file) into Endnote. Pretty much exactly as Endnote does, but the interfaces seems a bit “leaner”. It inserts the in-text citation and adds the work to your reference section. When you want to insert the citation in text, you click on a button in Word which pulls up the Zotero library. It also allows all sorts of data management options (adding tags, folders, notes) and it has a plug in for MS Word and OpenOffice, so it does the same sort of “cite while you write” as Endnote. I am also able to link the source document on my hard drive to the Zotero library citation. It also works great in Google Scholar and Worldcat. Like EndNote, it is INVALUABLE for snagging and storing citations when you are in an online database.
